SEJALAN — Carpooling & Ride-Sharing Platform for Commuters
Web platform matching drivers and passengers on shared commute routes for cost-sharing. Built with Angular featuring captain registration and promo system.
The Problem
Daily commuters in Indonesian cities spend heavily on toll fees and fuel, while many cars travel with empty seats. At the same time, passengers struggle to find affordable, reliable rides for regular routes. Traditional ride-hailing apps are designed for on-demand trips with commercial drivers — there’s no platform for everyday people to share their existing commute and split costs.
The Solution
SEJALAN is a carpooling platform that connects drivers (Kapten) with passengers traveling the same route. Unlike ride-hailing apps, SEJALAN captains are regular people commuting to work — not commercial drivers. By sharing rides, captains save on toll and fuel costs while passengers get affordable, reliable transport. The platform handles route matching, captain verification, and cost calculation automatically.
Key Features
Ride Matching
- Route-based matching — Passengers find captains traveling the same direction based on start and end points
- Schedule alignment — Matching considers departure times to ensure both parties are on the same schedule
- Cost sharing — Automatic calculation of toll and fuel cost splits between captain and passengers
Captain System
- Captain registration — Onboarding flow for drivers to register as Kapten Sejalan
- Route publishing — Captains publish their regular commute routes and schedules
- Earnings overview — Track fuel and toll savings from sharing rides
Passenger Experience
- Search and book — Find available rides along desired routes
- Promo system — Promotional codes and discounts for new and returning passengers
- Help center — Customer support via phone (+62 21 1500 607) and email (cs@sejalan.co.id)
Platform Features
- Responsive web app — Works on mobile and desktop browsers
- Analytics integration — Google Analytics for user behavior tracking
- Marketing pixels — Facebook Pixel for ad campaign optimization
What I Learned
- Carpooling requires trust infrastructure — People won’t get into a stranger’s car without verification. Captain registration, rating systems, and customer support are essential for building user confidence.
- Route matching is a hard problem — Matching two people going “the same direction” involves fuzzy geolocation, time windows, and detour tolerance. Simple point-to-point matching isn’t enough for real-world commutes.
- Cost-sharing models need transparency — Users need to see exactly how costs are split. Hidden fees or unclear pricing destroys trust in a platform built on sharing.
- Marketing pixels matter for growth platforms — Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics integration from day one enables data-driven user acquisition — critical for platforms that need network effects to work.
